This picture was shot during a macro photography trip to Wayanad, Kerala (India). Wayanad is part of the Western Ghats, one of the top biodiversity hotspots in India.Time
It was shot around 10 AM, during the morning trek through the jungleLighting
This Green Vine snake was basking in the sun on a branch. Luckily it was naturally well lit.Equipment
This was shot using Canon 7D and the Canon 100mm F2.8 L IS lens. I also used the Canon 430 EXII flash off camera for a very slight fill-light.Inspiration
This Green Vine snake was sitting on a branch, basking in the sun. When we all started shooting it from up close it got annoyed. These snakes are normally light green in color and very hard to spot as they look just like a 'vine' twirled around a branch. But when agitated it flattens it's body displaying a black and white chequered pattern as a sign of aggression. The way it had folded it's body in striking pose, with the mouth wide open gave me a fantastic opportunity to get this shotEditing
There was minimal post processing done in Photoshop. My workflow mainly consists of adjusting the exposure of the RAW file, cropping to correct the composition, and boosting the contrast and sharpnessIn my camera bag
I am a Canon user. Currently I use the 5D Mark3 and the 7D bodies. Have a wide selection of lenses for various kinds of work - Canon 100mm F2.8 L IS lens for macros, Canon 400mm F5.6 L lens for birds and wildlife, Canon 10-22mm for ultra wide angle shots, Canon 24-105mm for general walkaround photography, Canon 70-200mm F4 IS for portraits and general photography etc.Feedback
It's not easy to get such shots. Luck plays a key part in being there at the right moment, right position, right lighting, right settings. Also, the place where we shot this image was teeming with leeches ad I got many many leech bites. One needs to have a strong heart and a real passion for wildlife photography to shoot in such places
