Behind The Lens

Location

I love shooting sunrises and sunsets, so am always looking for locations that stand out.. The Sunset Grill on Isla Mujeres, with a name like that, gave me expectations and I was not disappointed. We actually spent several different nights there, and on this occasion, a couple of birds were flying around together back and forth, which afforded me opportunities to get some nice photos, of which this was my favorite.

Time

We came for dinner a little before 8:00 and I took pictures until around 8:21, this photo at 8:15 is one in a series of about 70 photos I took that night.

Lighting

Natural lighting with no flash. The backlight fro the sun made for a nice silhouette effect on the birds.

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D610 with a 24-85 Nikkor lens, handheld, no flash.

Inspiration

We were staying on the Island for 10 days, and I knew before going it was going to a photographers paradise. I took just over 1,000 pictures that I kept that week.

Editing

Ansel Adams said “Great photos aren’t taken, they’re made” I use Lightroom CC for cataloging and doing all my post processing there. It's a great tool, for me post processing is almost as much fun as taking the photos.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light, so I don't take much equipment with me when I go out on a shoot. Normally just my D610 with the 24-85 lens, on occasion I will also take my Nikon D5300 with a Nikkor 70-300 lens as well. I don't like to change lens a lot, so I would rather just have both cameras along if I think I am going to use more than one.

Feedback

Any time I am on the hunt for a sunrise or sunset, I always try to scout out potential areas ahead of time. I look of other items that can enhance the results, like the tiki bar on the right in this case. Shooting through something to make a frame of the sun is also a nice touch, boat rigging, tree branches, etc. Most of all, just try to enjoy the moment.
