Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the National Zoo in Washington, DC on Sept. 16, 2013. The Bald Eagle Exhibit is along the American Trail.

Time

2:34 p.m.

Lighting

Natural, afternoon light. The eagle was outdoors, in its enclosure.

Equipment

I use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150. It is a great little camera that uses a fixed, Leica 24X (4.5 - 108mm) zoom lens. This was a hand-held shot. I prefer to spot meter on most of my shots for greater contrast. (Just my style.) The Panasonic has an "Expressive" mode, which I also prefer because of deeper colors. Particulars of this capture: 1/125 sec., f5.2, ISO160, focal length 108mm.

Inspiration

We were exploring the National Zoo and saw that the bald eagle was outside. What better place to capture an image of our National Symbol than right there in Washington, DC?

Editing

My post-processing primarily takes place in PicMonkey, a powerful, online, user-friendly editing tool. For this shot, I cropped a bit for composition, darkened the shadows a bit, and cloned out any background fencing.

In my camera bag

My Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150, extra battery, Tiffen ND .6 Color Grad filter, UV filter. Pretty much, all that will fit in my purse!

Feedback

Photographing birds at a zoo frequently presents a challenge because of the wire caging. When zooming in, you can frequently focus past the first layer, but the background fencing will still be there. To eliminate that, I carefully cloned out any wires. A zoom lens really lets you find and focus quickly because they just don't sit still most of the time!
