Fantastic capture. It really shows his personality.

Behind The Lens

Location

Near Hue Vietnam. The Thein Mu Pagoda outside Hue. This is a teaching monastery for buddhist monks and famous for one of their monks being driven to Saigon and setting himself alight as a protest in 1963.

Time

It was Mid to late afternoon ., the sun was out and it had become quite hot and muggy. After sightseeing all day , my attention span was wavering.

Lighting

Sun was out and a few shadows .

Equipment

Nixon D5200, 55-300 lens . hand held .

Inspiration

As I mentioned my attention span was waning but when this monk came into the gardens to say hello , I was enthralled. His personality was infectious. I took quite a few shots from afar so as not to alter this . I did not want a posed shot .

Editing

Yes . All my shots were colour and i found that this one just worked so well in black and white. It captured the essence of the man . I also kept some colour shots of him laughing . Its in my gallery also.

In my camera bag

The usual. Portrait lens , landscape and zoom . Spare cards , batteries . Be prepared for anything .

Feedback

By keeping my distance in this instance and zooming in , I felt less of an intruder in this situation. A lot of people change their expressions if the know they are on camera.
