Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Mar del Plata, Argentina. It's called Bridge House or House over the brook (Casa Puente o Casa sobre el arroyo)

Time

With some friends we had decided to go to this museum-house to see the sunset.. the house is located among many big and old trees, making it a nice place to wait for the light shining through.. It was winter so we expected the sunset to happen around 4-5pm

Lighting

The day turned out to be cloudy, so the photos were turning out to be low contrast.. However, wind started to blow and the clouds became patches, making it more interesting to make photographs. I choose the location for this photo because it had shadows and highlights, reflections on the windows and shadow beneath.

Equipment

This was taken with a tripod and a Nikon D7100 camera with the kit lens 18-115mm lens

Inspiration

I decided to crank up the ISO as the place and lightning was leaning to dark, moody and mysterious and I've decided to make the photos black and white. This was the last one of the story I had in my mind. Reflections of a silhoutte on the brook, a detail of the trees, and then, the house. Seemed to be a mistery story.

Editing

I did global adjusments to increase the contrast. When I was happy with the global picture, I turned it black and white and started to enhance clarity, and details of the house. As this was taken with high iso, there was some grain that made it look mysterious.

In my camera bag

I'm packing two cameras right now. My Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 50mm 1.8, the kit lens 18-115 and my recently acquired Tokina 11-16! With this lens combination I manage to capture so many differents kind of photos. The other camera is a Canon Powershot SX50 hs that I use for sport and wildlife photography due to its huge zoom and for filming.

Feedback

The biggest tip, lesson I had learn from other photographers, be it through courses or books, or blog posts.. Is to understand light.. With no light there's no photography and to understand the quality and quantity, its color and temperature, of it improves hugely your photographs. Scout the surroundings of your point of interest to see the best place to make the photos. And be patient, light can be tricky and you have to be ready for the it is exactly as you want it to be.
