Great shot! Here in Texas, we have more rattlers than you could shake a stick at, but in the past few years, since I've been carrying a camera and want to get one, I haven't seen a single one. The only exception is one time when I was out without my camera. On the plus side, my camera seems to be pretty good snake protection.

Good image.. Could be better tho... The image makes me feel a little sick. Getting This close with this long a lens, Actually, I'd be surprised if there Wasn't motion blur, at this shutter speed, even with IS. The IS in these new cameras is impressive, but with the closest reproduction ratios motion blur occurs at surprisingly fast shutter speeds, and the IS won't help as much. A shorter lens will always help, but not everyone wants to photograph a rattler at 50mm, lol. So, instead A stop or two faster should fix the issue. ISO 400 and shutter, maybe 1/300, and maybe even one stop up on aperture. Mid/High ISO Noise is negligible on these new cameras, no reason to not utilize it... The stop up on Aperture should help with sharpness, and possibly as well as the bookeh issue. The Bookeh... has this double image feel, again possibly because your so close, And partly, possibly, because rattle snakes have such keeled scales. Not sure of the sharpest aperture on that lens because I don't know that lens. Generally tho, sharpest aperture is somewhere between Mid aperture setting and near widest aperture.. and Not the widest aperture. Kudos for the guts to get this close to a rattler.
