Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a bike along the Bow River in Canmore, Alberta right in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Time

This is one of my favourite images from a long weekend trip to Canmore. It started out as rainy, cloudy morning but part way through a mid-morning bike ride the clouds started to break up showing the beautiful blue sky. This photo was taken on June 28, 2014 at 10:55AM

Lighting

It started off as a dull, rainy and dreary morning until the clouds started to break apart and let some of the beautiful blue sky into the background.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 60D with an 18-135mm f/3.5 lens, no other equipment just a girl and her camera.

Inspiration

I was on a mid-morning bike ride with family and as always with a camera on me. We were biking along the Bow River Valley. When I turned around at one point and caught of glimpse of this scene and the photographer in my told me to turn around and go back. I walked a little way off the bike path so I could use the trees and shrub to frame the shot. I then waited a few moments for the rain to stop and noticed the clouds were starting to break so I waited to get a bit of blue sky in the shot to contrast the clouds.

Editing

Unlike a lot of photographers I choose to shoot in jpeg and not raw. In this particular case the shot was almost made straight out of the camera. A made a few minor adjustments to brighten up the foreground and some adjustments to the contrast.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 60D as my main body and then a Canon T3i as my back up. Along with my everyday Canon 18-135mm f/3.5 lens, Canon 70-200mm f/4 prime lens and usually my Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8. Depending on where I am going I will usually also have a monopod or tripod and sometimes both.

Feedback

The Rocky Mountains in the Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise area offer an abundance of landscape and nature photography options. For me, one of the keys to photography is to always have a camera on you as you never know when an opportunity will present itself. Fortunately this shot was a direct result of always having my camera with me. Landscape photography also has a tendency to take time and patience – you may spend time scouting out a particular area first then you may end up trying out dusk or dawn shooting depending out what look you are going for. Find an area you like and then go out and take as many photos as you can at different times of the day until you get that one shot you were looking for.
