WOW!!! What an awesome composition. I love the flying water and other action. I see that this was either done with a telephoto lens or you had a tall tree really handy. Excellent composition. I am not so sure about the concept of sticking around long enough to shoot the phototure.

Behind The Lens

Location

Lake Clark Nat. Park, Alaska, Crescent Lake. We flew from Anchorage by float plane and landed on Crescent Lake. It was raining and foggy and I just got a peak at the Redoubt volcano thru the clouds before we landed. Beautiful country. We spent the whole day on a pontoon boat just cruising around the lake looking for bears. We had seen several bears and one had a yearling cub that morning. Went into the lodge for lunch and almost immediately after lunch we found this sow and her triplet cubs. She was fishing hard to supply food for the family. She was chasing salmon when I took this picture. .

Time

The picture was taken about 2 pm. We photographed bear all day, It was an unforgettable day. Even though it rained most of it.

Lighting

It was overcast the whole time so lighting was all ambient. Actually was pretty good, no harsh shadows.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000, with a Sigma 150-500mm lens. This picture was taken from a tripod. I had purchased rain gear for my cameras but the boat was covered so it wasn't needed.

Inspiration

Alaska was on my bucket list and while I was there I wanted to go to Brooks Falls but It was too late in the year and the bear had stopped feeding there so they suggested this spot instead. I was a little apprehensive till we got there and it was a paradise. We saw two bear as we were taxiing in to get on the boats. I had seen one bear really go after the fish earlier but wasn't in a position to get a good picture. I was determined to get a good action shot. We saw her chase and catch two fish. She did miss a few too. When I took this she was heading toward our boat and I thought she would come up with a fish, but she missed it. I got a picture of her with a fish a little later.

Editing

I cropped the image and adjusted the lighting some. I use "Photoshop" so I used the vibrance adjustment to bring out the red in her coat. A lot of the bears in that area had a red tone in their coat.

In my camera bag

I have two Nikon D7000s and I keep a Nikon 18-105 mm lens on one and a Sigma 150-500 on the other. That way I am ready for anything I see. I have a couple tripods, extra batteries, and SD cards that go with me all the time. Some filters such as a polarizer are there too.

Feedback

If you are going to Alaska in Aug. be sure to bring your fur lined bathing suit and a parka. Just joking. I would recommend a good water proof cover for your equipment and rain gear for yourself. You can see bear almost anywhere in the state so always be prepared when you are traveling. If you are like me and want to experience the big bears it is good to book a bear watching tour ahead of time. They are a little expensive but well worth it. One good thing about Aug. was we didn't have to deal with mosquitoes, but it is the rainiest month of the year. I hope you all get to experience something like it in your photography journey. Enjoy the wonderful creations that God made and make that special lifetime memory.
