Location
This was taken near Falkland British ColumbiaTime
Taken late at night during one of the flare upsLighting
This was a particularily trick fire for crews to fight. Within a km of town and burning in very steep terrain.Equipment
This was taken on a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 18-300 f/3.5 using a cheap tripod.Inspiration
I has been out to a few of the nearby forest fires over the days leading up to the night this photo was taken. It is a very graphic end to the trees killed by the mountain pine beetle.Editing
This image was processed in Lightroom. The highlights, darks were reduced and the clarity, saturation were bumped up slightly. In my camera bag
I was travelling light for this shot. Normally i have my d300 and the 18-300mm f/3.5. I also carry my Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, 2,4&8 stop ND Filters, polarizing filter and standard UV filters. Tons of batteries and many cards. Since spend a lot if time alone in the wilderness i typically carry the associated gear as well.Feedback
Don't try and get close. These fires can turn and trap you in a place you wish you weren't. Above all stay out of the way of fire fighting crews. To get the shot it takes a lot of planning. Using maps to determine where the roads are and using forestry websites to track detailed information about the fire itself. Be prepared to wait. This shot was taken on my third night out.
