I was down at the Virginia Beach fishing pier and was using my new 9 stop ND filter and captured the sunrise coming through the pier. I love long exposure shots. The water looks misty and serene.

Location
I took this photo in Virginia Beach Virginia under the Va. Beach Fishing pier. One of my favorite places to shoot. I go there over and over again because the light is always different. The sunrises are always different. The waves are always different. The skies are always different.Time
I always try to arrive about an hour before sunrise. The pre- dawn light is so beautiful and at times is when the best color comes through. This morning I was there about two hours before sunrise to do some astrophotography too. The crescent moon was hanging low in the sky near the pier.Lighting
I used my favorite app LightTrac so I knew exactly where the sun was going to come up it was just a matter of waiting for the sun to rise and to get myself and camera in position. Patience is a big part of photography. You have to be willing to wait for just the right moment.Equipment
I used my trusty Nikon D5100, my Sigma 18 to 250mm lens my Flashpoint carbon fiber tripod that I bought from Adorama F-1128N. Love that tripod. It is so light and easy to carry and works great. I also was trying out for the first time my new Hoya 62mm ND400 9 stop filter that I bought from Amazon. I wanted the waves to look misty and wispy. Love that filter and have used it many times since.Inspiration
I love shooting sunrises at the beach. Since I live close to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic ocean it is great to have two different spots and many different areas along both to shoot from. The sound of the waves, the beauty of the sun coming up over the water is always inspiring. I love nature and landscape photography. I have been wanting to take this shot for a long time. Using my app LightTrac and the Photographer's Ephemeris I knew I could get this shot weather permitting.Editing
I used Lightroom 5 and Photoshop Elements 12. I adjusted the white balance added some clarity and sharpening, adjusted the highlights and shadows. I PSE 12 I needed to take some lens flare out. Other than that it was pretty straightforward. In my camera bag
I have a Lowepro bag and I carry a variety of lenses. I have my old Minolta X-G7 lenses that I used back in the late 1970's. I have a 200mm zoom/macro lens, a 28mm wide angle lens, a 50mm lens, a 2xconverter. I bought a converter from Amazon to use these lenses on my Nikon D5100. You have to shoot in manual and focus by hand but that's how I learned so no worries there. I also have my Nikon 18 to 55mm kit lens, my Sigma 18 to 250mm, some polarizers, ND filters, a star filter, extra batteries, some lens cleaners, a remote, a camera strap some lens adapter rings. I also have a lot of hope in that bag that I can take that one in a lifetime photo.Feedback
Have patience. Scout the area beforehand so you know the area well. Study the times when the sun the moon, the tides are what you want them to be for that shoot. Use phone apps which are a great source of info.Check to see where parking is. The biggest thing is patience. Be willing to to wait for the shot. Try different settings. Be willing to challenge what you normally shoot. Turn around. Sometimes a great shot is right behind you. Look UP. You'd be surprised what you see when you look up. The light changes so fast during sunrises. Shoot a lot. Patience is the best advise I can give and have fun. It is the greatest time in the history of photography and we are living in it right now. Smile, it's a beautiful world out there.
