It was taken in a women's hospital in Munich, during the pregnancy of my wife.Time
It was taken at five o'clock in the afternoon. My wife was pregnant with our first child and expected date of delivery was overdue . We had walked up those stairs around twenty to thirty times to help induce the labour.Lighting
The light you see in the center must have come from the sterile fluorescent hospital light. Overall the staircase was pretty dark so I set a pretty high Iso, as I was shooting without tripod (remember we were walking around inducing the labour).Equipment
MY Sony NEX-7 with the standard Kit lens 18-55 at 18mmm. No tripod or flash used.Inspiration
Basiclly my unborn son. He was the reason we were walking up and down the steps multiple time to help start his delivery. After having walked the stairs very often I just looked up and found it a very inspiring shot. I did a couple of versions shooting down, but they didn't have the impact of looking up. We were very nervous and excited. Vincent, our son, came in the early ours two days later. That's why the image is called Stairway to Vincent.Editing
I did the black and white conversion with Silver Efex Pro and some editing and minor spot cleanup in Lightroom. I have been asked if I added Film style grain, but it's actually the noise coming from the high ISO. For some reason it works quite well for this shot.In my camera bag
SONY NEX 7, Multiple SONY lenses, 18-55, 11-17. CAnon lenses, 50mm prime, 60mm Macro, other lenses according to shoot. Manfrotto tripod. Extra batteries, cables cleaning equipment, SD cards, PEAK Design security clip and leash. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary.Feedback
Always to remember too look up for other perspectives and viewpoints. Always carry your camera with you. I guess this perspective is a kind of classic in the photo world, maybe even a cliché, so I don't think it is too difficult to replicate. Just find a nice staircase. It does seem, that the simplicity of this one seems to resonate with people and it is one of the shots I am most proud of, as it also tells a bit of family history.
