Location
I took this photo with a bit of luck, I stopped at the lake near my home and in this very rare occasion, was able to snap off some great shots.Time
I shot this photo later in the evening during a visit to my local lake, I believe it was around 5pm.Lighting
My aim was to get the sunset to light up the blocks as much as possible to give that very cold icey look/feel to the photo.Equipment
I shot this on my backup camera, a Sony HX400V handheld.Inspiration
There is not much to say, this is a very rare event, after the lake has fully frozen over and the temperature changes so fast that the ice breaks up into blocks and gets pushed up on the lake shore.Editing
I believe on this photo, I adjusted the highlights a little to give the sky better definition. In my camera bag
I generally carry around my Nikon D7100 with a Nikon f3.5-5.6 18-105mm, Nikon 35mm f1.8 and my Sigma 70-300mm f3.5-6.0, along with a Raynox DCR250, several batteries and a cleaning cloth. I also sometimes carry a backup bridge camera, a Sony HX400V.Feedback
My only advice would be to visit your local shallow lakes on a daily basis during the winter, especially on days when then temperature has been fluctuating, I have only seen this event once, so I wish you good luck!
