Nikon D80, 70- 300mm Nikon lens set at 200mm; shutter at 1/750 at f5.6 and an ISO at 400.Inspiration
I am a big fan of air shows and airplanes in general. I am familiar with this type of airplane having worked on restoring one. They are not supposed to be capable of invited flight, so when they announced that this pilot would fly loops, I had to be ready to take a photo or two.Editing

Now I use a Nikon D7100 with a Tamron 16-300mm lens. I find this gives me the flexibility to take close up shots and distance in one lens. With the dust that is always in the air in the Phoenix area, it is a benefit to not change lenses.Feedback
For airshows, I use shutter priority and vary the shutter speed based on what is happening during the flying demonstrations. This way I have only one variable to adjust and can be much faster. Also, try to shoot with both eyes open: your dominate eye in the viewfinder and the other one following the subject. This should make it easier to maintain center on the moving subject. I will take some practice, but the results are better and you can recover faster for the next shot.
