Behind The Lens

Location

0n the south eastern coast at the bottom of the North Island of New Zealand, on the road to Cape Palliser lighthouse

Time

This was taken on 28th Aug 2014 at 07.50pm

Lighting

No lighting used except my flashlight to paint the road ahead

Equipment

Canon 5D mark III, 14mm Samyang lens, ISO 6400 30sec Manfrotto tripod 497RC2 head

Inspiration

I'd set off from home for the two hour journey hoping for a clear night to capture the night stars, but unfortunately it turned out to be a strange night with purplish hues in the sky and a lot of broken clouds drifting past. Once I'd taken all my shots of the milky way, various rock pools etc I set off for home. On the way home I looked in my rear vision mirror and saw the stars rising directly above the road, so I pulled over and took this shot as it seemed to me to be a great shot of the road leading to the milky way. I actually liked the impact of the clouds

Editing

I used Lightroom 5 and made some minor adjustments to exposure, colour balance and clarity

In my camera bag

My Canon 5d iii and my Samyang lens for night time photography and my EF 24-70 canon lens for daytime, I also usually carry another 2 canon lens's, the first being a 50mm and an 85mm one but neither get a great deal of use. A set of Cokin filters(both a set of Grad ND's as well as full ND's) and a Lee little stopper

Feedback

Just get out there and give it a go, I was a real novice with astro photography and the Canon 5d was brand new as was the Samyang lens and even though I knew the weather forecast was far from ideal and I had a 4 hour return journey I just wanted to get out to that location which has really dark skies and try them out (you know what its like with a new toy), practice, practice and practice more , my images are much better now ( a couple of years on) as a result of following my own advice
