Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my living room, I was sat down in front of the TV with my backdrop behind me and my camera set up on my tripod in front of me. I positioned myself with one side facing my light source, which in this case was the window, and took a couple of trial shots to make sure I had the right settings and that I was actually in the frame!

Time

It was taken mid afternoon, as I was looking to try out new techniques for my Project 365 and I wanted to leave enough time to shoot something else if it went horribly wrong.

Lighting

I am really lucky with the lighting in my living room. The sun passes over the top of the window but it is never low enough for it to be harsh lighting. My net curtains really diffuse the light that comes though, and luckily for me the day I decided to shoot this it was cloudy so there was no harsh light coming through in the first place.

Equipment

This was shot on my Pentax K3 with my (at the time) brand new Sigma 18-35mm f1.4. I used my unbranded remote shutter and a tripod.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind this shot was wanting to continue adding to a dark themed collection of shots I had started earlier in the year for my Project 365. When this shot was taken I was midway through year 4 (I started shooting every day in 2011) and I was experimenting and pushing myself to try new things. I'd obtained the bandages for free from work and they had been sitting in a draw for some time when I thought I would try giving it a go.

Editing

I extended the black from to make it square and rubbed out the band logo from the top I was wearing. I adjusted to colour and saturation settings in Lightroom to achieve the tones I wanted on my skin. My hair was already green so I left that as it was and I added a vignette around the edges to blend my hair and jumper into the background. In Photoshop I did minor dodging and burning and added a texture over the whole image to tie it all together.

In my camera bag

I always have my Pentax K3, a remote shutter and my tripod. I usually have my Sigma 18-35mm f1.4 and/or my Sigma 10-20mm lenses with me. I like to travel as light as I can!

Feedback

Shooting photos of yourself, especially close up can be a lot of trial and error but if you don't have a model to hand it is a fantastic way of still shooting your ideas!
