Location
The shot was taken at the 'Jagdschloss' (hunting castle) Granitz at Binz, which is part of the isle Rügen, in the north-east of Germany.Time
It was in the afternoon. Some tourists were at the castle - but it was not really crowded. You can even see some of them climbing up the stairs, which I thought gave the picture a really special atmosphere.Lighting
The highlights you see in the picture are natural. The tower has some windows in it (with a really great view btw!) so there was no need for a special lightning technique.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 60D and my Canon EF-S 18-55mm - so no tripod and no flash, just a freehand shot.Inspiration
I was about 10 years old when I visited the castle the first time and I was pretty scared of the stairs. First of all, I was afraid of heights and as you can see in the picture the stairs are not closed and can be looked through. So when I first got there I wasn't brave enough to climb the stairs to the top of the tower. Years later I visited the castle again and I was really excited about the stairs so before I tried again to get up to the top, I took this picture - partly to motivate myself, but mostly because I was really nervous and wanted to put off the climbing of the stairs ;)Editing
Just converted the picture into BW and added some contrast, so no big post-processing.In my camera bag
I mainly shoot with my Canon 60d combined with the Sigma 10-20mm or the Sigma 30mm. I love to take street shots so my everyday equipment is pretty basic and i try my best not to stand out of the crowd. Sometimes when I'm shooting architecture i use the Haida PRO II ND 1000 and a Manfrotto Tripod.Feedback
Look up and get out of your comfort zone! Some people tend to just shoot what they get right before their eyes which is bad because that's how you gonna miss some really cool things especially when you love architecture or street photography. For me, photography is about discovering the special in the ordinary. Showing people special moments or views of places and buildings they probably see each day but never took attention to, makes me really happy. So I always try to find some cool spots which are not so often photographed.
