Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at my farm .

Time

I was sitting outside on my porch after work around 17:00 and out of the field came the Gray Fox or Tree Fox.

Lighting

It was the evening on a February and the daylight was about to change to dusk.

Equipment

This capture was taken with my Nikon D7000 with the lens Nikkor 55 -300 mm. 1/250 sec f/5.6 300mm. This lens is my 'work horse' around the farm.

Inspiration

I seen the Tree Fox emerging from the other side of the fence through the high grass. In February in the deep South the grass is a mixture of green/brown which gives the Tree Fox the perfect cover. He was watching his 'dinner' a small rodent before he did noticed me sitting on the porch. I have most of the time my camera handy and just gave it a quick look of the correct settings and kept clicking away. I love taking pictures of all wild animals and my horses. I prefer to observe instead of 'staging' pictures. You never know what comes your way and therefore you can be a witness of pretty awesome nature stuff.

Editing

I zoomed in a bit and also adjusted the highlight/shadow.

In my camera bag

My standard equipment is the D7000 with the Nikkor 55 -300mm for all 'flying/running' things, the standard Nikkor 18 - 105 mm for close up or landscape, the Nikkor Micro 85 mm for very close and also a Tamron 150 -600 mm for 'sky/moon' or birds very afar. Tripod, extra flash and extra batteries comes handy also.

Feedback

Be patient and quiet. Sometimes I do stand for 5 min totally still and animals will let you see them. With my deer that come around on a daily base I whistle and they will look at me - that's when I take a 'shot'. It helps, if you adjust your camera to the light/distance before you get 'ready to shot'. I take a few 'test shots' before I stake out my next objects. Have fun and enjoy your next adventure.
