Love that you captured him so well....can see the texture of his skin, even the veins in his eye. We have frogs at home here in SE Qld and I am just waiting for them to appear when it warms up. Think he's smiling for the camera. Great photo.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my back patio. I have a family of green tree frogs that live in an old tree stump just outside the patio. They are so friendly and let you pick them up. They sit for ages without moving and make it so easy to photograph.

Time

This image was captured early evening. It was a beautiful warm night, as always in tropical North Queensland. I had just returned home from work as as I walked up onto the patio this beautiful green frog was sitting on my patio table underneath the light trying to capture the plethora of bugs wildly swarming to bright light. I quickly ran into to grab my camera and must have spent an hour taking photos, until my wife insisted I come in for dinner.

Lighting

The numbers of these Green frogs in recent years have been declining. One of the reasons for this has been attributed to the much maligned Cane Toad whom are seen as a major problem in Northern Australia. Large cane toads will eat baby frogs and they are devastating the indigenous wildlife at an alarming rate. I have controlled the number of cane toads on my property and so this wonderful family of green frogs has flourished. I love wildlife and Frogs especially and will continue to try and capture images of this magnificent creature.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 7D. I used my absolute favourite lense my 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM. I wanted to use the light coming directly overhead, it was a yellow flouro, as I think it adds to beautiful green colour of the frog. I anchored the camera on the table for a steadier shot.

Inspiration

I love Australian indigenous wildlife and these Green Frogs along with Green tree snakes are my favourite models. Sometimes I sit for hours outside just watching these beautiful creatures going about their business. They inspire me everyday to protect their habitat and prevent these magnificent creatures from being destroyed by urban development and non indigenous animals. We as a human race have a duty to preserve the wildlife and I for one am inspired to do so.

Editing

I try as a rule to do as little post processing as possible. In my eyes when I take an image I want that image to be as close as possible to what was in front of the lense. In this case it was very easy, this wonderful frog didn't need me to enhance it in any way. By being careful to set up the camera and composition before taking the shot, and the fact that he was a gentleman and stayed perfectly still, the post processing was very basic, ie contrast, Vibrance a little bit of de- noise work.

In my camera bag

When I go anywhere to take photos whether for Landscapes or street photography or wildlife the first lense I pack is my 100mm F 2.8L Macro. This lense is brilliant and even I can get tack sharp images (most of the time anyway). I also love my 70-200 F4L is USM. I love BIF photography and this lense coupled with the 7D is in my opinion unbeatable. I also pack my 17-55 F2.8 IS USM lens, although not an L Series lense it it still a great piece of glass. The last lens I pack is my 50mm F1.4. I love this lens, it's fantastic for low light photography when I can be bothered taking along a flash. Of course I pack my filters and cable release. Basically I take everything as I'm still building my kit and don't have a lot of gear lol. Oh I forgot my Vanguard Tripod and geared head, cannot go anywhere without that.

Feedback

I don't consider myself a great photographer yet and have learnt so much and been inspired by the brilliant photography I have seen on view bug. My advice to those photographers who are beginners like myself who love wildlife photography is to view the magnificent images on view bug. Most photographers have Camera a lens settings attached to their images. I have learnt a lot from this. Be patient! Wildlife is wild and do unexpected things. Take the time to set up your equipment properly, take test shots, check the histogram for the correct exposure. I like to expose to the right to get as much detail in the shadows as possible without losing any highlight information. The 7D has more noise than I would like, so ETTR also helps with this. My biggest piece of advice though is get out there and take as many photos as you can, practice practice practice!
