Behind The Lens

Location

This is a studio shot we did at my place. A very simple, yet functional home studio.

Time

Just about the happy hour =)

Lighting

In a way to exercise the simplest lighting schemes, I used just a umbrella with a difuser, 45 degrees to the model. I wanted to create an intimate and sofisticated look, somehow giving a sense o sensuality without using nudity. The main inspiration was the Film Noir light.

Equipment

I worked with a Canon 60D with 50mm lens, firing the monobloc strobe with a sync cord. Easy and simple.

Inspiration

I´m doing a long series of make up centered photos for a friend and felt the need to practice more face compositions. I love the jovial mood and expressions of this model and wanted to bring up a little sexy perception of herself. So, it was a perfect situation to play with the head and shoulders composition, using the her back and neck, some of the sexiest parts of a woman.

Editing

I used Photoshop to do a basic skin treatment, the B&W conversion and to sculpt more precisely the shadowns and highlights to create the mood I was in pursue of. I wanted to create film inspired look, with very deep shadows without loosing texture in the dark areas, and the frequency separation technique was the best way to do it.

In my camera bag

The most important part of my equipment are the strobes and the light modifiers. After modeling the light, any modern camera and lens will give you a nice shot. The 50mm goes great with APS-C, is the only lens I never left at home. Also, I always have the tripods, the remote controls, radio and cable to sync the strobes and a collection of colored gels and filters..

Feedback

Keep all the elements very simple, a natural pose, a ligh easy to control and play with the composition to catch the expression without distractions. The main points in this images is the eyes, the shiny skin and the dramatic contrast, so let them tell the story.
