Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the shores of Weehawken NJ, looking right across the river into Manhattan NYC. We were going to dinner and I happen to have my camera with me when we parked the car. I grab my camera real quick, got a few shots and went to dinner.

Time

It was early evening, late afternoon. The sun was still up and it was a hot bright day.

Lighting

The sun was in a great spot that lit up the buildings and allowed for great detail from a distance.

Equipment

This picture was taken in August of 2011. I was using a Nikon P80 at the time. It was zoomed to 110mm. The photo was then edited in Corel PaintShop Pro.

Inspiration

When I got out of the car to go for dinner, I looked across the Hudson and immediately knew I needed to get some of these shots. Besides this photo, I had a few others as well.

Editing

This photo was taken during the day. After going over the picture a few times, I realized that the picture was a good shot but it was boring. So to spice it up a bit, I darkened it a bit, converted it to black and white, and added the moon. The editing was all done in Corel PaintShop Pro.

In my camera bag

Like I said earlier, this picture was taken back in 2011. I have since upgraded my gear. I no longer have the Nikon P80. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a Nikon D850. My shooting now is with the D850, the lenses I use are the Nikkor 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 105mm, and a 50mm. I use a SB-5000 speed light on camera as the master and a SB-700 as a slave light. This lighting set has been working great for me for a while. I tried other lighting set ups such as mono strobes and continues lighting. But those set ups don't seem to be as versatile as my current set up. These two flashes let me go anywhere I want and do a shoot quickly. I did have a full studio lighting set up, but I didn't use it enough to warrant keeping it. Most of my gigs that I get hired for are on location type shoots. Events, product, or street photography.

Feedback

Just shoot, you never know what makes a great picture. During an average week I might take about 50 pictures, when I transfer the pictures to my PC, I might end up keeping about 8 of them. But I would have never gotten those 8 if I had never taken the 50. If it stands out, if it gets your attention, capture it, you never know.
