This photo was taken inside Dublin's Kilmainham Gaol in one of the many dreary and depressing corridors. The gaol is a former prison in Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland. It is now a museum run by the Office of Public Works, an agency of the Government of Ireland. Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed in the prison by the British, and in 1923 by the Irish Free State. The prison was also used as a staging post for 'convicts' before they were transported to the 'new world' in Australia and New Zealand. The typical crimes were stealing food just to live. The title comes from the opening line of a famous song of Irish immigration 'The Fields of Athenry'.
