This photo of my son was taken in the kitchen and this play table was a favorite for chewing during those teething days.Time
This was taken on a bright Saturday afternoon.Lighting
This is right next to large sliding glass doors where the afternoon light streamed in giving plenty of beautiful light.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon d600 and a 50mm f1.4 lens, 1/100 sec at f2/8, ISO 900. The camera was set on Aperture Priority using Auto-ISO so the shutter speed wouldn't go below 1/100.Inspiration
I had seen him doing this plenty of times and wanted to get a shot for posterity so I kept the camera near by. I wanted to focus on capturing those big blue eyes and the cuteness of the situation so I moved in close to minimize distracting elements in the background.Editing
In Lightroom, I lightened the exposure a bit and added a subtle white vignette to help focus the attention on the subject. Looking at it again, I could've cloned out the couple patterns on his pajamas to further distractions from the photo. I also cropped in and used the rule of thirds in this shot.In my camera bag
I normally have a 50mm lens on the camera as a walk-around lens since on a full-frame camera it is similar to your normal vision. If I know I'm going someplace where macro shots are a strong possibility then I'll bring one of those lenses too.Feedback
The normal advice with kids is to shoot at their level and that is what I did with this shot. It almost always makes your kid photos look better. In general too, I try to minimize distracting elements in your background as it will make the subject in your foreground stand out that much more. I'm a bit obsessive about straight lines so you'll notice too that the table in this shot nicely horizontal. That was fixed using the straighten option (hold Ctrl) when cropping in Lightroom.
