I took this photo from the beautiful French Atlantic Island called "il de Ré" - with the French Mainland in the distance (The city of La Rochelle).Time
On vacation, once the kids are put to bed, that is when my second day starts and I go image hunting. It is when most people are watching TV that I make the time for myself and head off with my gear. This image was taken around 21h30 because the summer days are very long in Europe.Lighting
I have been wanting to take this image for a long time, but we don't go there on Holiday every year (unfortunately). That evening, the weather was changing and the sun was setting in my back. As it started getting dark, I went to this spot - I wanted a darkish light for this image.Equipment
I shot with a Nikon D700, with a 24-70mm f2.8 lense on which I had a Lee Big Stopper to enhance the dark feel - obviously on a tripod. I also wanted to flatten out the clouds and the water in the foreground.Inspiration
We have been to the Il de Ré several times in the past, and I really wanted to take shot of this bridge. I also wanted to get away from the cliché sun sets (which are stunning because the light over there is just incredible). I also really wanted to push my creativity and create a unique image.I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and find a unique image. It had been lurking on my "images to do list" for quite some time. I wasn't sure that I would get anything - my tripod fell onto the beach with lense and Lee Filter attached - I had sea sand everywhere !Editing
Yes but very little. I am not very good on post production and used Photoshop Elements 11. I wish I knew how to edit and use software better. All I did was convert the image in B&W, and play a little with the contrast - basically, as with all my images, post production is kept to a bear minimum. In my camera bag
I'm Lucky to have the Equipment I have as an amateur. I have a Nikon D700,a 24-70 f2.8; 70 -200 f2.8; 105 f2.8 and a 50 f1.8 - all Nikon. A flash SB 600, and a Lee Big Stopper. I am now hoping to get a 14-24mm for my planned trip to New Year in DecemberFeedback
All I can say is go with your instincts, leave your complexes at home. I am so inspired by all the images I see on VB - I sometimes doubt myself because the photographs on VB are so awesome, but they also push me to do better. "Feel" the photo, see the light and you can't go wrong.
