Thank you. This photo of my parrot, Ace, is one of my personal favorites.

Behind The Lens

Location
This parrot, whose name is Ace, belongs to me. This was a close up shot taken in her aviary which is a large, tall structure. She would normally come down to my level when I go into the cage as she is always curious to see what treat I have brought for her. .
Time
This was taken mid-morning. I had gone into the aviary to play with her and she was in the partial shade.
Lighting
This was in natural light. Ace is accustomed to me having the camera pointed at her and gets really excited. There was a partial roofing structure over the cage which would have resulted in the photo being a little dark.
Equipment
This was taken with a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS which has an extendable lens with a terrific zoom. Natural light. No tripod.
Inspiration
Quite often I have my camera with me when I am in Ace's cage playing with her and she seems fascinated by the camera strap and the movement of the zoom lens. She gets really excited and sometimes although I am not taking a photo I just move the lens forward and back just to see her eyes light up. She thinks it is a big joke and laughs out loud.
Editing
Minimal post processing - I just lightened the photo as it was a bit dark as a result of being in the cage..
In my camera bag
Since taking this photo I have purchased a Digital SLR. I now carry a Nikon D3300 with two AF-S Nikkor lenses - a 55-300 mm and a 18 - 55 mm. With these lenses I am comfortable with most photo opportunities that I come across. Additionally I carry memory cards, extra batteries and a Lenspen cleaning tool.
Feedback
I am fortunate that I can actually get into the aviary with Ace. For other photographers who are not as fortunate as I am, parrots are curious creatures. I find that making little noises normally grabs their attention. Having a zoom lens is a plus as the distance between them and the photographer makes them more comfortable. Once they don't see you as a threat, they would normally relax and start chatting, grooming themselves or sit quietly and observe you.
