So it's winter here in Australia, which explains why I haven't been taking or posting a lot of pics. However, two weekends back I missed taking photos and so I took my camera bag and drove 2 hours to this amazing place I have photographed before. When I was driving there I had a different photo in mind, I didn't expect the sun to be out at all but there is a rocky beach nearby and I wanted to take some long exposure shots there. As I was hiking there, I felt the sun come out and hit my neck on this cold, windy winter evening, I turned around to see this amazing frame. I immediately pulled out my camera and took a few photos, this scene only lasted about 5 minutes after which the clouds won against the sun. But regardless I got what I wanted and boy was I thanking my luck :D
P.S: This image is not a HDR, it was actually shot as a single image. I've edited it carefully to mimic a HDR type image :)

Hi Ãrpád, I'm still learning, like most other photographers. Could you explain to me why this composition works well?

Hi Joe, My guess is that this is Cape Shank Lighthouse ... I love the way you have treated this shot ... Well executed ... Cheers Trish.

Hi Trish, you're spot on. This is Cape Schanck. One of my favourite spots to shot around Melborne! Thank you for the kind words :)

Hi,you edit phototures well, the foreground with little sunshine good, the background with clouds and sunshine good. You had to use tripod and longer expose.

Bigbang, the composition works well for a couple of reasons. For one it follows the "rule of thirds" by having the "subjects", the sun and the lighthouse, on or close to lines that would split the frame into thirds. Secondly it has "leading lines" which guide your eye through the image or to a subject. In this case the lines created by the shore/cliff and the sun rays both guide the eyes toward the lighthouse.

Hi Tom, thank you very much for putting this into words. I knew the composition worked but I couldn't put my finger on why exactly. I suspected the rule of thirds but I completely forgot about the leading lines. Thanks once again for highlighting this, if you remember anything else please feel free to highlight it as well :)
