Prickly Fruit in Adriatic - Med region is ripe in December and January. It is vitamin-rich and quite tasty.
The problem is the handling, as the small brushes spaced all around the fruit consist of hundreds of fine, sharp needles, much like glass fiber - and with the same effect on human skin.
The simplest way to wipe these off the fruit is with wet piece of thick cloth. An olden, folky way to remove the needles "en masse" is to roll all the fruit in mud and let dry. When dried mud is removed, needle brushes are removed too. I used old working gloves to wash the needles off the fruit in the sea.
After these preliminaries, peel it like an apple and make jam, or fruit salad, or simply eat it right then and there.
