Thank you for your entry to my challenge and congratulations on winning there were a lot of top photos but this just stood out to me. As well it's always good seeing young people getting involved with photography.

Behind The Lens

Location

this was taken in my backyard next to some shrubbery, with some woods in the backgroung

Time

the time of day was about 6:00. it was heavy overcast, so i was shooting wide open at f/ 2.8.

Lighting

i think one if the best things about this image was that it was an overcast. it created some really soft light which was perfect for not creating harsh shadows in the face ans under the camera.

Equipment

i did not have much choice in the gear i was using, because this was photo very spur of the moment. the little girl grabbed my a-1 off my desk and said excitedly "lets go take photos outside!" i knew this was photo gold so i just grabbed my camera with whatever lens happened to be on it. luckily it was my 550d and trusty tamron 28-75 f2.8.

Inspiration

when i saw her with that retro camera peering up at me through the viewfinder, i knew it was photo gold. and i had to document it

Editing

post processing is always a challenge for me to explain. but in this photo i decided i wanted a filmy look, and i wanted to do it myself and not rely in a preset. in lightroom on the raw file, i added +14 contrast to make the image look less flat. then because the a-1 was really shiny, i brought the highlights down to -81 to bring out the detail in the camera. the shadows i put at +16 to add detail an the dark bits. the whites were at -45 for the same reason that the highlights were so low. the blacks were up to +82 to start to bring in the filmic look. clarity was pushed to +25. the vibrance was at +62 and the saturation was at -21 to add to the film look. the curves ajustment was where this came to life. in the manual part (like photoshop curves) i brought the lowest point about 1/4 of the way up the side, then had the first quarter of the curve go down then the rest of the curve went up. the highlights lights darks and shadows just elaborated on what i had did up in the top.

In my camera bag

in my lowepro flipside 300 i pretty much always have my 550d with a battery grip and tamron 28-75 f/2.8 on it. to add to the range i carry a canon 75-300 f/4-5.6 III lens also, but i try not to use it much because its not the sharpest thing ever wide open and the auto focus is less than responsive and often misses. i always have my nifty fifty 50mm 1.8 II and my 24mm 2.8 stm pancake lens in one compartment. i also have a speedlite 420 ex, ettl wire and a a couple cpl filters and extra uv filters.

Feedback

as always just flollow your shooting instincts because 99.9% of the time they are right. don't try to force anything with kids because then they become less natural. and just let it happen.
