I started shooting snowflakes a couple of years ago and have been working on my process. Snowflake 2015-008 is a combination of 50 stacked images of various focus. Using a micro 4-3 adapted Minolta 85mm1.7 lens with a reverse mounted Olympus 50mm 1.4 on the front of the Minolta I was able to produce a 3.5:1 macro magnification. The lens combo was mounted to my Olympus O-MD E-M5 body. I captured the snowflake on a piece of black cloth and slowly turned the focus ring while shooting at 5 FPS. The photos were processed first in Lightroom and then stacked and merged in Photoshop CC.

Thanks! That is quite the compliment! It does take a lot of stamina to stand out in the frezzeing weather hoping to get an intact flake. Even though I capture them on cloth the usually explode when they land.

Amazing...I live in New England and after seeing as much snow as I have in my life, you really don't see snow in this manner. Hard to imagine that billions if these make a huge mess. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! I'm an ametuer that has always loved to take photographs. I'd LOVE to be able to do stuff like that! I recently became disabled due to permanent nerve damage in my back. And right leg so I'm thinking I might try to learn more about photography as a hobby since I have spare time. It's just a matter of when I'm not in too much pain...

It was a while back, but it was Minolta 85mm 1.7 with a reverse mounted Olympus 50mm 1.4. I put the camera on high speed drive and slowly changed the focus. Shot 50 frames and stacked them in photoshop. Thank you.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in the middle of winter. Shooting snowflakes can not be done in a controlled environment, only a freeaing one!

Time

During the afternoon

Lighting

Using a special macro focusing guide that I designed, the light travels through guide and does not cast any shadows.

Equipment

Olympus E-M5 Mark 1, reverse mounted Olympus 50mm 1.8. Reverse mounted on a Minolta 85mm 1.7.

Inspiration

God's beautiful design!

Editing

Over 50 shots were taken and the images were stacked in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Olympus Micro 4/3 Pro gear
