Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Maroubra Beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs. I always liked this part of the beach as it has a small rock pool that faces the ocean with these amazing small rocky areas that have great texture and colour.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon. I chose this time of the day due to the fact when the afternoon sun hit the cliff face, you got some really cool shimmer and shadow effects on the rocks.

Lighting

So in the afternoon the light that was coming off the cliff side was giving a very nice soft bounce. There was some shimmer from the wet rock that gives a bit of a twinkle but was also able to you it as a bit of fill light.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon 6d with a 24-105mm lens.

Inspiration

Believe it or not this was not a planned shot. This was a shot inbetween takes. The model was a bit nervous and really didn't know how to position herself and was abit self conscious as well because of her muscular frame. however, this shot came from her adjust her hair cos the wind had picked up at this point and it was getting in her face. I noticed that she was alot more comfortable and also was relaxed so I figured I would take a couple of snaps while she was adjusting her hair. Lucky I did, because I feel this photo shows strength, beauty and confidence.

Editing

I decided to shoot this in black and white to give a bit of depth from the cliff side. The only thing I did in post was adjust the contrast and added some slight sharpness to make her stand from the wall a bit more.

In my camera bag

i usually have my camera body which is a Canon R5 with a good 85mm, 70-200mm and a trusty 50mm. also use my Iphone 12 pro to do test shots with before I set up my camera for filming.

Feedback

Sometimes you will get talent that can be a bit nervous and not quite sure how they stand, move etc. The most important thing to remember is to give your talent plenty of positive and encouraging prompts to get them to relax and feel comfortable. Also look for moments in between shots. Sometimes the best shots come from not planning a shot at all.
