Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Newcastle Airshow, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Time

I took this photo sometime in the afternoon. I had been shooting all morning, and was about to take a break after lunch, but couldn't resist taking this photo as the Harvard flew past me.

Lighting

The sky was completely cloudless, so I was working with the harsh winter sun. Thankfully, it did not prove too much of a problem.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D MKII, and an old, manual focus Cosina 100-400mm.

Inspiration

I love aviation photography, and aviation itself. I hardly ever miss an opportunity to take photos at an airshow, and the Harvard has a special place in my heart.

Editing

Not much post-processing was done on this photo - just a little dust removal and improved contrast.

In my camera bag

My bag always has my Canon 5D MKII and Canon 70-200mm f4.0. Apart from that, my 50mm f1.8 may sneak in, and if I'm shooting airshows or concerts, my Cosina 100-400mm will definitely be in my bag.

Feedback

I have found that there are no set rules for aviation photography (apart from capturing motion). You need to do what feels right for you - slow shutter speed when necessary, and just enjoy yourself.
