Behind The Lens

Location
The Joshua Tree National Park is part of the deserts in California. It consists of very different landscapes: Areas with cactus, areas with the name giving Joshua trees and rock formations. It's one of the famous climbing areas in the world. This photo was taken near a place called "Hidden Valley", where in former times stolen cattles were "rebranded" :-)
Time
I have done the photo at my fist day at Joshua Tree. It was done in the early afternoon. A lot of people were climbing at the rocks.
Lighting
Very untypically for a desert: It was raining the night before. At the west coast was a huge thunderstorm and the clouds on my photo are the leftovers of this. So I had a calm light without the typical harsh shadows you will have normaly at this time.
Equipment
I used my Nikon D800 with my 20 years old Nikon AF Micro 105mm/2.8. It's done without a tripod or other equipment.
Inspiration
I tried to show the dimensions of the nature there. If you are seeing the bolders in the distance you have no glue how big they are. They were looking not so big to me. But if you see people there, you see how big they are in reality. So I was looking out for people in my photo. They should not be recognizable because I needed them only to show the scale.
Editing
I converted the photo into monochrome using Silver Efex Pro, which is part of the Nik Collection. I wanted to show the drama in the sky and the structures of the rocks. With this tool you have full control at the areas you need to improve.
In my camera bag
The equipment is not as important as to have a good eye for a scenery. I have a Nikon D800 as one of my newest parts in the bag. My lenses are: Nikon 24mm/2.8 (20 years old), Nikon 50mm/1.8 (bought together with the body), AF-S 4,5-5,6/80-400 G ED VR (together with a teleconverter TC III) and my favorite Nikon AF Micro 105mm/2.8 which is also 20 years old and produces great photos. Often I use a tripod. Flash is rarly in use. I have a Metz flash.
Feedback
If you are doing landscape shots often the feeling for dimensions get lost. Especially if you are doing a photo in an not so known environment. Then you should place something in your photo, where the dimension of this object is clear to the watcher of the photo. People are pretty good, but also a car, a house, a bag, a bottle is good to give a scale. A pure landscape whithout people is often done to show the beauty of nature. But you can bring in a "witness" in form of a person to make it more alife.
