Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio.

Time

One summer evening my friend and I thought we would try a shoot with dramatic lighting down in my new studio.

Lighting

This shoot was specifically done to try out new lighting techniques. All I had on was a constant light from one side of my subject, and a much brighter strobe on the other side, to create the dramatic lighting.

Equipment

I used my Sony a65 camera, with a 18-55 mm f3.5/5.6 lens, one constant light, and one strobe light.

Inspiration

I had seen a lot of glamour shots and actor portfolio headshots recently, and noticed how all of them had one main bright light source, and one less bright for fill. I really liked that and had never done a shoot with one constant and one strobe before, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Editing

The only thing I did to this photo was adjust the lighting and contrast to really make it a dramatic shot coming from the shadows of the background.

In my camera bag

I typically carry around, besides my camera of course, a 18-65mm and a 55-300mm lens. If I am doing and outdoor shoot, I always be sure to carry my reflector. I also carry around a flash from time to time, if it's dark or shadowy outside, or I am trying to create a more dramatically lit photo in studio.

Feedback

Mess around with lighting often! You never know when you'll get that perfect shadow or position that makes a photo really stand out from the others!
