Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my makeshift home studio (a.k.a. my living room).

Time

Judging by the light, it must have been mid-mornging, which is quite a surprise, since I am rarely home in the mornings. So it must have been taken on a weekend too.

Lighting

Morning light is the best for flower macro shots; it does wonders in bringing out the details in the stems.

Equipment

Since this was taken in my beginner days, my Nikon D3200 and the 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G kit lens. Sometimes "starter" equipment works wonders. And my black backdrop as well.

Inspiration

The way these two stood proudly, facing the sun, really caught my eye; because of the morning light, the colours were so vivid, and the black backdrop brought them out even more.

Editing

For the most part, I don't like editing my photos much; in most cases, I go for the "what you see is what you get" approach. I think I might have sharpened the details in this one though.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5300 of course, and the Nikkor 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens (which I almost never use, but I always bring along), my Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G prime lens. I love using the prime lens, especially with portraits, because you have to get really close to the subject. I also carry my polarising filters and my remote controller, because you never know when they might come in handy.

Feedback

When photographing flowers, you need to be paying attention to the little details, that's all. The way flowers lean towards the sun, the colours, the stem, the pollen on the leaves; you can't ignore these things. Inspiration is all around us, we just need to keep our eyes open.
