Location
This photograph was taken in Rosalia, Washington. A little farming town outside of Cheney Washington where I live.Time
This image was taken about an hour before golden hour. Not every good image needs to be taken at golden hour, but those that aren't might need a little love in photoshop.Lighting
I wanted the lighting in this to feel warm and inviting even though there was snow on the ground.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark II with the 24-105 lens. I was handheld. I prefer doing handheld because depending on what you're shooting in nature, you just don't have the time for a tripod! I also prefer to use my 24-105 lens when shooting this type of shot. I needed a wide angle to get everything in the shot. The prime lenses I own don't offer that. It's also nice to be able to go into a location with one lens capable of doing a number of things in potentially tight quarters.Inspiration
I have an obsession with leading lines in images. I was going for a drive on the backroads looking for a new location to use for a shoot. I just happened across this place and fell in love. The way the driveway lead you into the scene, and the rounds of hay perfectly framed it. It was fate for sure.Editing
It hadn't actually snowed in quite sometime. The snow on the bales was hard and crunchy. I added the effect of a soft falling snow, and touched up details on the existing snow with photoshop. I always "painted with light" in photoshop. I go through and add dodging and burning in areas to make the image really pop.In my camera bag
I always have two camera bodies. My main camera is a Canon 5d MarkIII and my backup is a MarkII. Just incase. The typical stuff like spare batteries, memory cards, chargers etc. An external flash, and two AlienB strobes with battery packs. The special stuff I bring- I fill the back of my suv with props. Random things that might be cool to shoot. Then I go for drives. I take the old ragged dirt roads that most people avoid. They almost always lead you to some place magical!Feedback
In order to take amazing shots, you need to find amazing locations. Then you have to be patient! I have driven every single back country road within 200 miles of where I live. I explore and scout every chance I get. Once you find an amazing location, it's all about timing. If the lighting or sky isn't right on the day you find it, mark it in your gps and come back another day. Have a specific look and feel you want in your image before even taking a photograph. Really get a feel for the area you're shooting. This will help emotion come through in the final product.
