Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the window of the Willis Tower, the former John Hancock building in Chicago. My family was with me, including our son, Brendan who had recently graduated from college. It was such a beautiful night and a perfect place to celebrate a special event.

Time

This image was taken at about 8:30pm.

Lighting

The city provided the light and I shot with a high ISO to preserve the clarity of the image.

Equipment

Canon Mark 11, 24-70 lens.

Inspiration

We were celebrating the graduation as I mentioned, but couldn't resist the beauty of the downtown area at sunset.

Editing

I used Define, Topaz filters and sharpened the image in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Have a Canon Mark 11, 24-70 lens, tripod and remote release all the time.

Feedback

To get the best image, arrive a bit before the "golden hour" to take some practice shots. Shoot as close the window as possible and watch the glare on the glass. So far, most places allow a gorilla pod rather than a tripod for safety reasons as these location can be quite crowded. I shot this without the gorilla pod this time, but would usually recommend using one if possible.
