Location
I took this photo on a working historical Jersey Farm. I had just gotten a new lens and couldn't wait to try it out!Time
This was taken in the afternoon. The sun was boiling and all the farm animals were panting in the shade.Lighting
I was initially afraid it was going to be too dark, but then this little calf poked his head out into the sunlight to see what I was doing.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5100 and Sigma's 17-70 f2.8-4 contemporary lens.Inspiration
We've been going to this historic Jersey farm for years to see milking in action and admire the horses and cows. We were disappointed to find that the calves were off limits this year, so I snuck around back to peak at them through an open door. This little calf was just as interested in me (and a blue rope) as I was in him.Editing
I can't remember doing any post-processing. If I did, it would have been minimal editing in Photoshop Elements. I often adjust the shadows and highlights a little, but usually leave everything else alone. In my camera bag
I don't carry a bag. I have health problems, so I have to go as light as possible. Generally I carry either a Sigma 70-300, or my Sigma 17-70 with my D5100.Feedback
Always be ready for the unexpected. I have my shutter set to continuous; that way I can choose to shoot one picture, or a burst, depending on the subject. Animals, especially young ones, are always in action, so a fast shutter speed is paramount. Also, try to meet them on their level and and show the viewer their world.
