Behind The Lens

Location

This pre-dawn shot was taken whilst on a break at Arran in Scotland. The ?rst morning here the forecast and tide predicted perfect conditions for a sunrise shoot and as our holiday cottage was metres from the beach, a 3.50am alarm call was absolutely necessary! Unfortunately, 10 minutes later, when the sunrise was forecast the cloud overhead almost dissipated and smothered the horizon making for a very poor sunrise.

Time

Just before the sun came up, around 4.30am

Lighting

Sunrise was forecast for 4.40 so I had plenty of time to try a few compositions and decide which grad, ND ?lters and what ISO and aperture to use for the long exposure. I decided on a 0.6 Hard Grad, Lee Little Stopper and set the aperture at f/11 and ISO at 50 which gave an exposure of 190 seconds, which from experience, I knew would be perfect for the amount of cloud present.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 16-35mm L f/4 IS USM lens with a 0.6 Hard Grad ND filter and Lee Little Stopper, a 6 stop filter.

Inspiration

The stunning scenery in this little island in Scotland was inspiration enough.

Editing

With not having access to a computer with Lightroom, I set the camera to take both RAW and .JPEG. I slightly tweaked the .JPEG in Lightroom Mobile on my iPad.

In my camera bag

My kit bag contains Canon's range of professional photography equipment which includes:- Canon 5D Mark III, Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens, Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT and 480EXII Flashguns, Elinchrom 400/400 D-Lite 4 RX Studio Lighting Kit, Lee Filters - ND hard and soft grad, Big and Little Stopper ND filters, Manfrotto tripod and 410 geared head

Feedback

Try not to rush around taking as many shots as possible, take your time to work on the perfect composition.
