Century Manor is the last remaining building of Hamilton’s once impressive insane asylum. This building was home to the worst of the worst, to the criminally insane.
The asylum started as a place for drunks, taking in the alcoholics of Toronto when opening in 1876. The doctors felt the location was perfect, with such an amazing view of Hamilton from the escarpment, a view that this would calm and motivate the worst of mental disease.
