Behind The Lens

Location

I snapped this photo in Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada on the waterfront of the Bedford Basin. I took this shot in May and the backdrop is looking towards Halifax-Dartmouth and the Halifax Harbour.

Time

I shot this photo in the middle of the afternoon on an overcast day which was perfect since that was the only time we could get these five busy children organized for a photo shoot.

Lighting

I didn't do anything special for lighting with this photo since the lighting on that day was perfect for photos. I didn't have to deal with harsh shadows or sun spots. All natural light is my favourite!

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with an 18mm-200mm lens, with no tripod and no flash.

Inspiration

These children are remarkable children and didn't know each other before this photo shoot. They range in age from 6 - 18, but have one big thing in common. They all live and thrive with Type 1 Diabetes(T1D). They are amazing examples of positive role models for other children and adults living with Type 1 Diabetes. These 5 children are Ambassadors for JDRF(Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and are passionate about helping to make a difference in the lives of people living with T1D. I am inspired because one of these children is my son who was diagnosed at the age of seven in 2013 and has taught our family about courage and strength with what he lives with on a daily basis. The photo was used across Canada for national JDRF campaigns.

Editing

I didn't do much post processing for this photo except increase the saturation on the blue slider in Lightroom and I also increased the clarity to 100% to give it the edgy and grainy feel.

In my camera bag

After I pack my Nikon D7000 I always pack my 50mm Prime lens, my 18mm - 200mm for wide angle shots and usually my Macro lens makes its way into my bag. My tripod is never too far away because it could be needed at any time. A sense of humour always needs to be packed when going on a shoot with children and families. Keeping things light and fun always makes for better photos.

Feedback

I am always trying to do something different and from a new perspective. These children were all given their sneakers as a gift so focusing on their feet seemed like the appropriate type photo to capture. Their feet were smiling!
