Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Inari Shrine in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. These densely placed Torii (or gates) are flanking a long set of stairs that go from the old town area up to the shrine.

Time

I ascended this small mountain fairly early in the morning and this particular image was taken after reaching the top. I would estimate that it was taken between 9 am and 10 am in September.

Lighting

The morning light shines between the torii which creates a glowing effect on the vermilion color. They appear even brighter during this time than they do in afternoon light.

Equipment

Just a simple low end DSLR Camera. I can't remember which one this image was taken with, but it was cheap and purchased back in like 2000 or 2001. As this image was taken just a year or two later.

Inspiration

I love to travel and take photos of all the things I see while on an adventure. Of course torii are a common sight while traveling around Japan, but so many placed so close together is quite the spectacle. There are a couple of other shrines that have a similar look, but this one in Tsuwano was just captivating. And the lovely line that the torii created made for some nice repetition images.

In my camera bag

I usually just have a camera. On occasion when I am able to plan ahead I do bring a tripod. Oh, and I recently got a selfie stick to try out with my phone's camera. We'll see how that goes.

Feedback

Travel & practice! Many of the pictures I am most proud of were created because I was out exploring the world. And you don't even need to leave your own city or state - travel and new places are all around us. But I find the most compelling subject matter is often things and places I have not scene before, or not scene in that way. I almost always have a camera with me. And my friends and family expect that I will be the one recording all of the moments at events. Don't be disheartened when not every single image works out. There is a lot of trial an error when you try different and new techniques. With practice you can discover beautiful ways to photograph. I am very much a novice at photography, but I really enjoy the art and love to take pictures. And doing what you love is fulfilling.
