Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Corcoran Park alongside the Clarence River, Grafton, Australia.

Time

I took this photo in June, which is winter here in Australia. I took this about 3.00pm. It was a lovely, warm, winter's day so I had walked to the park with my children and while they played I sat and watched the birds in the reeds.

Lighting

Being winter, and mid afternoon, the sun was not high, and it was behind me casting natural light where I was looking.

Equipment

I used my 550D Canon camera with my 100-400mm Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM telephoto lens. I was sitting at a picnic table so used that to help with stability.

Inspiration

I have often heard the birds in the reeds beside the river. While there is variety there, there are also regular birds. Given it was a sunny day I took the opportunity to sit and observe so as to hopefully capture the birds as they appeared.

Editing

The only thing I did to the photo afterwards was to crop it in a little.

In my camera bag

Over the last 2 years I have added to my camera bag. I have an extra camera body, a 760D Canon, spare batteries for both cameras, 5 lenses - 50mm, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 100mm macro lens, and the zoom lens I used for this photo. I also have a number of SD cards, lens cleaners, and a lens flipper which I really love.

Feedback

I am still an amateur photographer. Sometimes I get lucky and capture what I want just right. I had my camera on the sports setting for this photo which uses continuous shooting, and does the settings automatically. But this setting also requires great light, like what I had, as it allows for the quicker shutter speeds. If you would like to capture a similar photo, go out on a day when there's good natural light, use a zoom lens to help you get a close shot. Whether you use manual mode, AP mode, or TV mode, capturing birds requires a faster shutter speed which is why good light is needed, particularly for the small, flighty birds.
