Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful building can be found at Ancient Siam in Bangkok, Thailand. It is known as one of the world’s largest outdoor museums and has over 100 famous monuments and structures.

Time

This photo was taken at my favourite time of day, sunset. We often visit this location as it’s so tranquil and beautiful during the golden hour. I set up my tripod, laid back on the grass and waited! As the sun started to go down there was a sudden appearance of photographers around me, quickly setting up their tripods. It was then the skies suddenly changed to this amazing magenta! As quick as the sky turned pink it went away just as fast lasting only a few minutes. Everyone was silent!

Lighting

I wanted this image to capture the temple’s beautiful soft reflections and soft skies. To be honest the image still doesn’t give justice to the scene that appeared for me but it’s pretty close!

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Sony A7R, Zeiss Distagon 28mm, tripod and a remote.

Inspiration

My inspiration came from the serenity of the temple. There are quite a few images floating around the internet of this temple but always in bright sunlight. I felt they never gave this beautiful piece of architecture justice as perhaps it needed to look a little more divine!

Editing

I always shoot landscape in RAW and post process in LightRoom5 although I now prefer Photoshop with luminosity masks.

In my camera bag

My bag is relatively small as I like to travel light. My favourite lens is a Voigtlander 15mm MKIII which I never leave behind and combined with my Sony A7R II (recently added), is perfect for landscape photography. Adding an ND 1000 filter, camera remote and Manfrotto carbon fibre this is basically all I need! I did mention I like to travel light! If I know I'll be travelling a whole day I'll add my Sony Zeiss FE 55mm 1/8, Sony Zeiss 35mm 2/8 and Sony 90mm G Macro. I can still pack all this into my small Nat Geo bag!

Feedback

I love sunsets and colours continuously change even when the sun has gone down. Relax and take your time. It’s a little like fishing but more rewarding! A tripod is a must with camera remote for that ultimate sharpness!
