Behind The Lens

Location

Cape Dorset, Baffin Island, Nunavut , Canada

Time

This was shot in the evening in March. Even this time of year the days are short but the blue hour lasts hours and is marvelous place for that type of lighting. Also there was a very fine snow falling which enhanced the burning town look. Yeet all was fine at -32 C

Lighting

The blue hour lasts for hours as explained below.

Equipment

My Canon 50D is set up with a number of functions and is often the camera of choice for quick outings with my presets available, as was the cold weather situation. The 70D has froze in much harsher temps but the old 50D will hold upon short jaunts in these temps.

Inspiration

My work takes me to the Arctic from time to time to make dentures, and it is hard to make time for personal interests but love to get out and shoot. This was my first evening out and I had to check out these giant canoes out on the ice. There are a number of them and locals tak their team or snow machine and take the canoes out to the flow edge (where the ice never forms) and hunt for seal walrus and whale. Yes this is practiced year round. Sustinance is real in this part of the country.

Editing

I have used photoshop for a number of years as an amature and lightroom has now become my goto software. I still use photomatics for any HDR

In my camera bag

I have Canon products , lenes 10-24 24-70 70-200 Cameras is a 70 D and 50D slick tripod with manfrodo ball head ND filters circular polarizer

Feedback

Shooting in cold climates tests ones abilities and equipment, one's breath freezes on everything from the facial hairs, including eyelashes very quickly. Stay warm and wear layers especially the hands.
