NoonLighting
Books teach photographers that noon is the worst time for taking pictures because of bad lighting. In most cases it's true, but there some exclusions. Water (or ice like on this shot) changes it's colour depending on the time of the day, weather etc. And I believe at that noon was the perfect lighting for this beautiful saturated colour of the ice.Equipment
Canon 5d Mark II + Canon 24-70L + polarizing filterInspiration
It was my dream to go to ice skating journey on lake Baikal. It's so cool and unusual way to travel. When I found myself on the ice I couldn't stop taking pictures!Editing
In 95% cases I use only Lightroom for post-processing. For this image I corrected the white balance, changed camera profile (I use X-Rite ColorChecker Passport for creating camera profiles) and corrected highlights, lights, shadows and blacks to balance exposure and add more contrast. In my camera bag
Normally when I travel I take my Canon 5d Mark II and lenses: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, most times also Samyang 14mm f/2.8. For 24-70 and 70-200 lenses I take UV and polarizing filters. If I go to places with water like waterfalls I also take ND8 filterFeedback
Frozen Baikal is one of the best places on the Earth for photograpers. It gives you many opportunities to get a great shot. You just need to photograph the moment in the correct way. Sunrises and sunsets in most cases is the best time. Depending on the time of day the colour of the ice can change. You can also take nice shots when it's cloudy.
