Location
This image was taken at the top of Grand Montets ski station around 3200m up in the town of Chamonix in France.Time
I always start the day with a good breakfast to give me energy for hiking around the terrain with my camera and snowboard. This was from my first set of images from the day so it would have been around 09:00am. The beauty of shooting at this time was that the sun did not have enough time to burn through the low cloud cover which adds so much to the dramatic effect of the image.Lighting
The lighting was perfect for what I had in mind. The clouds diffused the light perfectly and the snow on the ground reflected the light back up giving an almost natural light box for me to work with.Equipment
I shot this handheld with a Canon 7D as it is fast, weather sealed and robust and fitted with a 24-70mm Sigma lens it is the perfect set up for carrying around the mountains.Inspiration
Leading lines... I love them in any composition. A leading line that can guide the eye through an image and tell the viewer a story is to me very inspirational. In this image the cables guide you from the top left down to the cable car and beyond through the clouds to the base station.Editing
I used Adobe Lightroom to add a little punch by upping the red saturation slider and adding extra contrast and clarity. Also when shooting in the snow it is quite common to end up with a blue tint to the image so I used the blue slider to reduce the saturation rather than adjust the white balance which would have warmed the image slightly taking away the extreme cold feel of the image. In my camera bag
What's in my kit bag is determined by what I am shooting that day. Though generally I will have a Canon 5D MKlll, A Canon 6D, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 for general use, a Canon 17-40mm f/4 for wide shots, a Canon 50mm f/1.8 for some portraits, a speedlight, lots of memory cards and spare batteries and a tripod.Feedback
My first piece of advice would be to dress accordingly, there is nothing worse than getting to a location and being to cold or wet to shoot. Check the weather before heading out and tell people where you are going. Make sure you keep spare batteries warm ideally close to your body as the cold temperature drains batteries very quickly. Lots of cloths to keep the snow of the lens and be careful not to fog up the lens by nipping into somewhere warm. Always have a way of contacting people in case of an emergency.
