Location
This was taken at my friend's camp house on the Grand Lake in the Louisiana Atchafalaya Basin. I was walking through the woods behind camp and found this fallen tree with ferns growing on it.Time
This was taken around mid afternoon after a storm came through.Lighting
Considering it was mid day, I was very pleased with the available lighting because clouds from the storm diffused the sunlight perfectly. The sun poked through the tree canopy behind the log and shined down to give me the bokeh effect in the background.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with a Canon 16-35 2.8 ii lens. Instead of using a tripod, I used the log itself to stabilize the camera by resting it on the top.Inspiration
Nature has always inspired me, so walking through the woods after a summer rain was a perfect time to go and capture images of things I love. This shot ended up being one of my favorites from that hike.Editing
I typically like to do minimal post processing. I much prefer to spend my time behind the lens instead of in front of a computer screen editing. For this photo, the only post processing I did was a minimal increase in vibrancy to make the green pop in the ferns and moss.In my camera bag

Having patience for nature photos is a must. Waiting for good lighting to come your way is what will set your nature images apart from the rest. While most nature photographers live for the dawn and dusk golden light, there is also something to be said for the diffused light that comes from mid day cloud cover like this image has. One thing that has helped improve my images is paying attention to lighting throughout the day even if I don't have a camera in my hand. By doing this, I have trained my eye to appreciate good lighting when I see it. This makes it easier to capture the image I want when I see good available light.
