This photo was taken just off the coast of San Diego - USATime
Early afternoon - not long after middayLighting
This is all ambient light. The sun was high in the sky, there were no clouds and the shark was near the waters surface which is why the light is so spectacularEquipment
Camera - Sony rx100 mk2 in a Nauticam underwater housingInspiration
We were out looking for sharks to swim with and photograph the whole day. This was our best interactionEditing
This is practically straight out of the camera. I adjusted the exposure and highlights down and bumped up the clarity a tiny bit, that's allIn my camera bag
Canon 5d mk3, 8-15mm fish eye, 24-70 f4, 70-200 f2.8 and my Aquatica underwater housing if I'm in the seaFeedback
Its all about being in the right place at the right time. This required a boat and a captain / guide that had a lot of knowledge about sharks and the local waters. Once you got that it's mainly down to luck to see if the Sharks turn up. With regards to camera settings I shoot on full manual ensuring that I have a fast enough shutter speed to capture the movement of the shark. To be honest I shot this at 1/200 which was a bit too slow. I should really have been up at 1/350 or 1/500 which is why you can see the movement in his snout. This was shot at around midday when the sun was high and I was above the shark so the lighting looks good. If you are shooting when the sun is low in the sky try to get the sun behind you and then it will light up the side of the animal you are facing
