Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Guadalupe island which is 241 kilometres off the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon say around 1pm

Lighting

This is all natural lighting. The water is very clear and the shark was close to the waters surface

Equipment

I used a Sony rx100 mk3 in a nauticam housing with a fish eye lens

Inspiration

To be honest I was snapping away and hoping to get an amazing photo of his mouth from the front and I didn’t quite realise how good this photo turned out until I saw it on my laptop

Editing

Yes but only a little. I just brought the highlights down a bit and upped the clarity. It didn’t need much

In my camera bag

Now I have a canon 5d mk3 and mk4 and a big selection of lenses and speedlights. If I am doing underwater then I have a large housing with a dome port and 2 underwater strobes. I can only pack camera gear on a trip like this, no room left for clothes

Feedback

To capture something like this you need to just dial your settings in to get the correct exposure for the available light. Make sure your shutter speed is fast as a turning or biting shark moves very fast. Then shoot shoot and shoot. The more photos you take the better and then you can sort through them after. You will only have a limited time to get a good shot
