Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge in NY. The bridge connects Brooklyn and Manhattan and this is a shot of the Brooklyn side. Most of the time we see photos of the Manhattan side.

Time

This was shot during the sunrise at 5:57am on April 26, 2015. I live an hour subway ride away from this place. But I purposely left home 2 hours earlier around 4am so that I can be there before the sunrise and set up my equipment and figure out the shots that I want to capture. However, there was a train delay due to construction and I had to run to the Brooklyn bridge to get my shots during sunrise. While running I kept looking back at the sky to see which direction I have little bit of clouds and color of the sky. By the time I got on to the bridge the lovely pink color started appearing on the Brooklyn side so I ran towards Manhattan and when I reached at the middle I decided to prepare for the shots. I literally made this shot within a minute or so after arriving.

Lighting

I love capturing photos early in the morning. For some reason early morning lights give me a totally different feeling. Even though golden hour appears twice in a day but for me the early morning is the best. Also you'd encounter much less people on the early morning compare to sunset time. That's another reason why I love taking early morning shots.

Equipment

This shot was made on Canon 6D with EF17-40mm f/4L lens. I also used 2 and 3 stops LEE ND Grad filters for the sky. The camera was mounted on Oben AC-1351 Tripod. I used remote shutter along with mirror locked up option on my camera.

Inspiration

Before taking this shot I've been to the Brooklyn Bridge 2 other mornings. On the first day I arrived little late but I witnessed an amazing ping light on the Manhattan skyline, unfortunately I didn't have enough time to capture it. That lighting was so amazing that it made me go there on the following weekend but it was a rainy day. I captured yet another different type of ping shades on the Manhattan skyline on that day. So finally I made my third trip to capture this amazing ping light but on this morning I captured the pink sky on the Brooklyn side instead of Manhattan skyline.

Editing

I used ND Grad filters for the sky but some parts of the Brooklyn Bridge also underexposed due to it. I had to open up some shadows to bring back the details. Besides that the normal tonal correction was made along with other minor adjustments. There wasn't any need of deleting elements so I only used Lightroom to enhance my photo.

In my camera bag

Since I mainly focus on Landscape I carry the typical equipments for the Landscape photography. Most of the times I have 3 lenses in my bag: 17-40 f/4L, 70-200 f/4L, and 135 f/2L. I also carry LEE ND Grad and LEE 10 stops (big stopper) ND filters. I also carry a simple wired remote trigger, Canon 550EX II flash and extra batteries. And of course you can't take good quality landscape shots without a tripod. I have a separate tripod bag for my Oben AC-1351 tripod.

Feedback

Well there are couple of things that I'd have done differently if I knew. MTA usually has construction plans overnights and weekend. So if you want to go there by Subway keep extra time in hand. It'd be nice to know exact route you'd need to take to get to the Brooklyn Bridge because wondering around takes precious time away. As I've stated earlier that I love taking morning shots which has benefit of not having people in your shots. If you even don't want to take photos visiting this place around sunrise will definitely give you a special pleasure.
