Great night shot of the Three Sisters. I was at Goblin State Park in Nov. 2013 stayed over night( the only person in the camp ground) I took a early morning sun raise but I like this Night shot very much, well done. Bruce

Love Goblin Valley but your photo makes it look other worldly. Your skill in getting this shot is just wonderful. I tried to get a similar photo but without much success. Got to remember to take the lense cap off. It was a long night!!! Ha, ha!!!

The Milky Way Over Three Sisters. This was put together from 4 shots. The moon was about 25% lit to give me the light I wanted for the foreground for my first shot about an hour after sunset. The others were taken to emphasize the Milky Way, a couple of hours later after the moon had set to darken the sky. I tried light painting the rock formation too, but not with great results. The formation is too large for really great artificial lighting and getting a high enough angle to look somewhat natural just didn't seem to work. Enjoy!

Behind The Lens

Location
Goblin Valley State Park, UT
Time
There were a total of four exposures from the same location. The first was taken about an hour after sunset, with a crescent moon lighting the foreground. The other three were taken about two hours later after the moon had set and the Milky Way risen.
Lighting
The lighting is what makes the photo. The relationship of the Milky Way, the moon position and its phase are critical for this photo, leaving only a few days of the year this shot is even possible.
Equipment
Canon 6D camera body with a Canon 17-40mm wide angle lens.
Inspiration
I decided this would be the year of the night photo for me. I travel far and wide to try to get great shots. In the past I prayed for partly cloudy skies to light dusk and dawn shots. This year I looked for clear skies.
Editing
Yes, I used Photoshop to blend the photos. Multiple shots were taken of the Milky Way and blended for noise reduction.
In my camera bag
Lots of Canon equipment, a red headlamp, and an intervalometer.
Feedback
It's all about research. You can only hope for the weather to cooperate.
